ClickFunnels Setup Guide: From Signup to Your First Live Funnel
This is a free, standalone setup guide — not a course. It walks through the one-time steps of getting a ClickFunnels account configured and your first funnel live, checklist-style, with no lessons or curriculum to work through. If you want a full multi-lesson curriculum instead, see our free GoHighLevel CRM course or our free Systeme.io funnel-building course — this guide is a companion to those, covering the ClickFunnels-specific setup steps on their own.
Step 1: Create Your ClickFunnels Account
- Go to ClickFunnels' signup page and start the free trial — no funnel can be built or published without an account first.
- Choose the plan tier that matches how many funnels and pages you expect to need; you can change tiers later, so don't over-think this on day one.
- Verify your email address as soon as the confirmation message arrives — some onboarding steps (like connecting a domain) are blocked until the account is verified.
- Set your workspace name and time zone in account settings. The time zone matters later for scheduling email sends and reading accurate analytics.
Step 2: Pick a Starting Template
- Open the template library and filter by funnel type (lead generation, product launch, webinar, etc.) rather than browsing everything at once.
- Pick a template that matches your offer type, not just the one that looks the nicest — a webinar funnel template and a straight sales-letter funnel template are structured differently under the hood.
- Clone the template into your workspace before editing anything, so the original stays available if you want to start over.
- Do a first pass renaming each page in the funnel (opt-in, order, upsell, thank-you) so the funnel map stays readable as you build it out.
Step 3: Connect a Custom Domain
- Decide whether you're pointing an existing domain or buying a new one — ClickFunnels can do either, but an existing domain needs a DNS change at your registrar.
- In ClickFunnels' domain settings, add your domain and copy the DNS records (usually a CNAME or A record) it gives you.
- Log in to your domain registrar and add those exact records — don't modify the values, and don't delete existing records for that domain unless ClickFunnels' instructions say to.
- Wait for DNS propagation (this can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours) and confirm the domain shows as "verified" or "connected" inside ClickFunnels before moving on.
- Assign the connected domain to the specific funnel you're building, since a domain isn't automatically attached to every funnel in your account.
Step 4: Connect a Payment Processor
- Open the payment integrations section and connect the processor you plan to use (Stripe and PayPal are the two most common).
- Follow the processor's own authorization flow — you'll leave ClickFunnels briefly to log in to (or create) your processor account and grant access back to ClickFunnels.
- Confirm the connected processor shows as active before attaching it to any order form; an order form pointed at a disconnected processor will fail every checkout.
- If you'll charge in more than one currency or run recurring billing, check the processor's own settings for that now — it's easier to fix before you have live customers than after.
Step 5: Build the Core Funnel Steps
A basic funnel needs four steps in place before it's ready to test:
- Opt-in page. One offer, one form, one call to action. Keep the ask small (name and email is usually enough) — every extra field is a reason for someone to abandon the page.
- Order form. Attach the payment processor from Step 4, set the price and product name exactly as you want it to appear on the buyer's statement, and add any order bumps here if your offer uses one.
- Upsell / downsell. Build the one-click upsell page (and downsell, if you're using one) that appears immediately after the order form. Confirm the "accept" and "decline" buttons each route to the correct next step — this is one of the most common setup mistakes.
- Thank-you page. Confirm the purchase, set a clear expectation for what happens next (access instructions, delivery timing, or a support contact), and avoid leaving this as a blank default page.
Save and preview the full funnel path end to end after building these four steps, before moving on to email integration.
Step 6: Connect Your Email List or Autoresponder
- Open the email/autoresponder integrations section and connect the platform you use for follow-up (this can be ClickFunnels' own Follow-Up Funnels, or an outside tool via its integration or a webhook).
- Map the opt-in and order forms from Step 5 to the correct list or tag in your email platform, so a new lead and a new buyer land in different places.
- Send a real test opt-in and confirm the contact actually appears in your email platform with the right tag before building any automation on top of it.
- Turn on just a minimal welcome or receipt sequence for now — you can build out deeper automation later, but a working basic sequence beats an elaborate one that isn't finished yet.
Step 7: Test Checkout End to End
Don't skip this step. Before sending any real traffic:
- Run a full test purchase using your processor's test mode (or a real low-dollar transaction if test mode isn't available) — opt-in, order form, upsell, thank-you page, all the way through.
- Confirm the payment actually shows up in your processor's dashboard, not just inside ClickFunnels.
- Confirm the test contact receives the correct emails from Step 6, and that any product delivery (a download link, a membership login, etc.) actually works.
- Check the funnel on a phone, not just a desktop browser — a broken mobile checkout is one of the most common ways a funnel quietly loses sales.
- Fix anything that failed and re-run the full test before going live — one clean end-to-end pass is the bar, not "it mostly worked."
Step 8: Launch
- Switch the payment processor connection from test mode to live mode, if your processor has a separate mode toggle.
- Publish the funnel and confirm the live URL (your connected domain from Step 3) loads correctly.
- Run one final real purchase on the live funnel with your own card to confirm live mode actually works — test mode passing doesn't guarantee live mode is configured the same way.
- Turn on whatever traffic source you're using (ads, an email send, a social post) only after that live test purchase clears.
